Lefkada is wonderful Greek Island in the Ionian sea on the west coast of Greece. The island measures 35 km from north to south and 15 km from east to west. The island has a typical Mediterranean climate: hot summers and cool winters, especially in the mountains.
Lefkada (or Lefkas) is the sleeper hit of the Ionians. Mountainous and remote in the centre, with gorgeous vistas and forests. Holiday resorts tend to cling to the east coast where 10 satellite islets dot the sea.
Lefkada is less insular than most islands, it was once attached to the nearby mainland by a narrow isthmus until occupying Corinthians breached it with a canal in the 8th century BC. A causeway now spans the 25m strait, yet Lefkada remains steadfastly islandlike in the best of ways. In remote villages older women sport traditional dress and the main town, Lefkada Town, has a refreshing mid-20th-century appeal.
There are some spectacular sights to visit on the island such as, the Castle of Agia Mavra which is was build by the Franks while they occupied Lefkada in 1294, the Monastery of Faneromeni (2km from Frini Village) and the Waterfalls of Nydri a waterfall on the mountains of Lefkada with clear crystal water that end into a gorge of amazing scenery with white rocks.
The visitors can also reach the Archaeological Museum of Lefkada that illuminates the island's history from the Palaeolithic era to the Romans.
A lot of beaches surround the gorgeous island of Lefkada and some of them are, Porto Katsiki which is the most famous that includes an impressive landscape with exotic blue water and amazing golden beach sand. Another one beach that should be referred amongst many other is the Agios Ioannis beach which is ideal for windsurfing and kitesurfing due to the big waves and the windy weather of the area.
