Koutourou

A cosmopolitan vintage style cafe with cool decor and tapas-style menu with modern Cypriot cuisine. The perfect place for a relaxed drink and a light meal in a great atmosphere, in Pafos' old town.

It is ideally located in Pafos' old town, near the police station.

The morning it operates as a traditional coffee shop, during lunchtime as a gallery and at night as a traditional cozy ouzeri. Koutourou ouzeri in Pafos, may be changing three appearances during the day, but the delicious food stays always the same prepared by the very owner chef Demitris Nikolaou.

All these, in a classic restored mansion that looks like it came out of an alley of old Athens. The collection of antiques are scattered on the walls and the repertoire includes only rebetika songs.

Demetris Nicolaou, the owner of Koutourou, shares: "I could be a hugely encouraging example of what can happen when a cared for past meets a vibrant, modernist present. Situated in the old town close to the old fountain, Koutourou used to be a family home, but has survived several makeovers with a good deal of the atmosphere and integral structure still as the day it was built."

The current interior design theme is vintage collectable with an incredibly interesting array of genuine vintage items on display from metal advertising signs, tin toys, telephones, robots and an entire wall dedicated to a display of old typewriters.

The other great thing is the that the food comes in ideal size portions, so one can dip in and out of a range of what could now be called Cypriot Tapas delights, such as home made dips of which the spicy cheese takes some beating, or oven cooked halloumi smothered in caramelised onions, smoked herrings, also whitebait, or a plate of shiny steamed greens.

You can order a plate of mouthwatering beef cooked in red wine, or a dish of pork belly cooked with soya sauce, honey and coriander. There is also that instant sign of generosity when the village salad comes out, here the usual postage stamp portion of feta is absent, and instead one is offered an envelope of the stuff along with probably the tastiest fresh-from-the-oven individual loaves.

The Koutourou is open from Monday to Saturday 11:00-15:00 and 19:00-01:00, on Sunday the tavern is closed.
